Title: "Dangerous Dates"
Fandom: Original
Prompt: #218 - Explosion
Warnings: Silliness.
Rating: PG
Summary: Dating is going to be the death of me, but in the interim it gives my friend Charlie a lot to laugh about.
Word Count: 785
Notes: I'm using the same characters I used for prompt #210 - Feral, but you don't have to read one to read the other. They're both stand alones.

My dating life has always been fraught with danger of some sort. Over-protective fathers, meddling mothers, and the occasional jealous ex-boyfriend all make navigating romantic relationships difficult at best, impossible at worst. Among my group of friends I’ve become something of a legend due to my bad luck with women.

But Charlie was still shocked when I turned up on his doorstep out of breath, clad in the remains of a shredded polo shirt and slacks.

“Dude, I thought you were on a date tonight.”

“I was.”

He stepped aside so I could slip past him and into his hallway. “Did you get tossed into a combine or a vat or something?”

I shook my head. “I wish, man.”

Charlie leaned forward and started to sniff around my ear and neck, something he knows I hate, but before I could protest he finished and stepped back. “You were out with another werewolf.”

“Yes, I was.”

He sighed and pushed past me to walk into his kitchen. “That explains the clothes. What did you do to piss her off?”

“Nothing, I swear.”

“Don…”

“Charlie, dude, so help me I didn’t do or say anything. Up until the attack, I thought the date was going rather well.”

“In other words, up until you made your move.” He set about putting on a cup of coffee.

“There was no move, not even a witty double entendre. One minute we were sitting on her couch watching a Cheers rerun and the next there’s a set of fangs snapping at my neck and claws tearing at my new clothes.”

The coffeemaker hissed as it turned on. Charlie looked back at me over his shoulder, one eyebrow raised skeptically. “Did your date know you’re not a wolf?”

“Yes…maybe…well, I thought so. I mean, she said she’d heard about me through some friends of yours so I assumed that meant she knew that I’m a…I’m not like you.”

He frowned. “What was her name?”

“I told you yesterday, dude. It’s Shelia.”

“Whoa, you went on a date with Shelia the werewolf?”

“Yeah, man. Like I said, I told you.”

“I thought you were just telling me her name. You didn’t say she was a werewolf, otherwise I would have told you to stay away.”

I blinked. “But you’ve talked about her before after your full moon meetings. You said she was a sure thing.”

“I what?”

“You said once that Shelia from the red pack was, and I quote, ‘Always horny.’”

“No, dude, I said she’s ornery. Big difference.” He rubbed his forehead. “Shelia is…well, she’s one mean woman and not someone you want to piss off.”

“Oh.”

“And if she didn’t know you were a Chihuahua before the date…”

“Well, couldn’t she smell me?”

Charlie shook his head and started searching through his cabinets for his sugar and creamer. “Shelia doesn’t have a very strong nose. Her mother was human so she didn’t get a full dose of the wolf genes. I mean, she’s got most of the advantages the rest of us have, but she’s just not as strong as us in some regard. In fact, some humans have a better nose than her.” He set the containers on the countertop. “We have some mutual friends in the group, but they don’t know much about you other than your name, and if she asked anyone, they probably assumed she already knew like you did.”

I slumped back against the wall. “That explains why she got mad when she leaned in to kiss me. She must have gotten a whiff of my animal because I was a little nervous and excited.”

He nodded. “Yep.”

“Man, this sucks.”

“Tell me about it, dude. She’s probably going to come yell at me at the next full moon.”

“Yeah, well if she does and you see an explosion of black fur, run man. Run as fast and as far as you can.”

“Explosion?”

“That’s what it looked like to me. One moment there was a skin and then suddenly there was a furry wolf ready to eat my heart right out of my chest.”

Charlie chuckled. “Go into my room and get out a change of clothes. I’ll call Tim and Sarah to see if they’re up for some D and D.”

“You can’t fool me. You want to tell them what happened.”

He grinned. “Oh yes.”

“Bastard.”

“Not going to deny it, but it’s not really my fault you’re cursed.”

I started walking toward his room. “Yeah, well, we’ll see how hard you’re laughing when a date finally does prove fatal for me.”

The sound of Charlie’s guffaws followed me to the bedroom.

Man, no one ever told me dating was this hard.
