OMG!!! Brent Spiner is on Twitter! Brent as in, Data, as in, "Fully functional," as in that creepy Area 54 scientist in Independence Day Spiner!!! Did I ever mention I had a huge crush on Data when I was growing up? ...yeah, that might explain a lot more about me than it should.

Anyway, I'm now following Brent Spiner on Twitter! How cool is that?

Oh, and that's not all! Levar Burton is there too! I have half a mind to tweet "Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as hiiiiigh" right now. Do you think he gets that a lot?

Ahem. Calming down now.

*continues to squee at her desktop and giggle girlishly*

Want to hear a good joke? Yeah?

OK, so this woman she has this IUD, you see. Yeah, and she wants to get the strings shortened, right? Typical event, no big deal. So anyway, she goes to the health center and has a nurse practioner perform the procudre. Now - stop me if you've heard this one before - the nurse practioner tugs on the strings and out comes the IUD! She says, "Uh oh" and then she tells the patient it's a good thing because she thinks IUDs are bad and that she's against abortion! Not only that, but that it happens so often it's become an office joke that she pulls the IUDs out on purpose! Doesn't that just tickle your funny bone?

What? Why aren't you laughing? I guess you don't have Sylvia Olona's sense of humor. Here's some highlights:

"As Defendant Olona began the procedure, (the plaintiff) felt Olona pull on the strings of the IUD. (The plaintiff) felt a distinct pulling on the strings followed by a sharp pain in her uterus similar to a very strong menstrual cramp.
"As that happened, Defendant Olona stated, 'Uh oh, I accidentally pulled out your IUD. I gently tugged and out it came.' She then explained, 'I cut the string than went back and gently pulled and out it came. It must have not been in properly.'
"Olona then stated, 'having the IUD come out was a good thing.' She asked (the plaintiff) if she wanted to hear her 'take' on the situation. Without receiving a response, Defendant Olona stated, 'I personally do not like IUDs. I feel they are a type of abortion. I don't know how you feel about abortion, but I am against them. What the IUD does is take the fertilized egg and pushes it out of the uterus.'

I can accept that shit happens, sometimes I think I could write a biography entitled "Hey, Shit Happens." I'd make a million dollars and then lose it in some freak banking error, because, hey, shit happens. What I can not and will not accept is that a Physician's Assistant/Nurse felt the need to question a woman's decision in birth control based on factors other than her health. It's fine and dandy if Olona is personally morally opposed to abortion and she wants to buy into the anti-choice lies about IUDs - that's not the issue. The problem is that she imposed those beliefs on another person and went so far as to remove a medical device based on those beliefs. It's unethical and it is a violation of that patient's rights.
"Defendant Olona stated, 'Everyone in the office always laughs and tells me I pull these out on purpose because I am against them, but it's not true, they accidentally come out when I tug.'

"Everyone in the office always laughs..."

Yes, taking out a device that can cost upwards of $500 or more out of pocket (because some insurance companies would rather pay for Viagra than birth control, and that's even if you can afford insurance) is hilarious. The very thought that it happens so often that the people in the office can joke about it has me rolling on the floor with tears streaming down my face. I mean, my stomach is hurting because I can't breathe through the laughter as I imagine Olona going back into the office and giggling while saying, "Oops, I did it again!" Ok, not really. Well, there are tears, but they're not tears of laughter.

This is the type of shit that makes my blood run cold. I sincerely hope Obama makes Reproductive Rights a priority.
