Hear me RAWR!
Apr. 3rd, 2009 04:55 pmToday I have decided to mow my lawn for the first time. I've done a little less than a quarter so far and am taking a break so as not to get overheated or dehydrated. While doing this I am of four minds:
I figure I'm burning off a lot of calories, and if the rain keeps up like it has been, I'll be needing to do this a lot throughout the spring and into the late summer/early part of fall. I'm borrowing Mom's push lawnmower as I figure I'm young and, while out of shape, I don't feel particularly winded or in danger of passing out while pushing. However, I may not always be able to take so much time to mow and may need to look into the purchase of a riding lawnmower at some point.
Anyway, hydrated again, and feeling cool(er). Heading back out to gather up some pine cones and finish the sideyard and start on the front lawn.
ETA: Lawnmower ran out of gas and I left the gas can at Mom's by accident. Oh well, it was going to take me two days to do it anyway. I'll just get the gas can tomorrow. I did almost finish the sideyard at least. Just a few feet more of it and then I can move on to the front yard, then the back and other (much smaller) side yard. Woo.
ETA2: Dear self,
Your skin color can best be described as alabaster. You know for a fact you can start to burn in under ten minutes. Next time you mow the lawn, put on a baseball cap and sunblock.
Love,
Me.
(For the record, I'm not burned, but I see my arms are a little reddish and I can feel that my face may be pink for a day or two. I feel very dumb right now. Then again, it is only early spring and I usually never think about it unless it's really warm outside. *sigh*)
• I am AWESOME! A single mom doing what most of my neighbors would define as "man's work," and doing it well at that. I'm barely breaking a sweat, though that's credited to the wind providing some lovely cool breezes.
• The grass trembles before me! Naysayers would say this is just the wind blowing, but I can tell each blade has heard the name Jade and they are cowering in terror.
• Pine cones "explode" when hit with a lawnmower. (I didn't see it, otherwise I would have removed it from my path.)
• Holy crap I have a huge lawn. 2.5 acres of land, and most of it appears to be grass. I'm still not done with my side yard, and I was mowing for nearly an hour nonstop.
• There are way too many ant beds in my yard. Fire ants at that. Ugh.

(In all seriousness, you studied your ass off for this. Take it easy and celebrate, man. You totally earned it.)
