I finally got around to reading and finishing Witchling by Yasmine Galenorn. I had high hopes when I picked up the book, but they were all crushed pretty quickly.

In which I admit my issues with 'Witchling' are mostly personal. )

I know I've been quiet since Christmas Eve. The truth is Christmas sucked and I've been kind of keeping to myself as a result. I'm doing better now that I've had some time to get over how hurt I was by Mom leaving so early, and also so I could adjust to another year without Dad around. The kiddo and I have been vegging out for the most part.

I purchased a new set of Nikes yesterday. They were on sale, and I was able to get two other pairs of shoes along with them for roughly the same price I would have paid had the Nikes not been on sale. I've mentioned before that I have big feet for a woman, but I was shocked that I could find Nikes at a local store in my size and on sale. Usually, I have to go out of town. I needed a new pair of shoes as the pair I paid eleven bucks for were starting to come apart at the soles, and Nikes tend to last me for a long time. Plus, the other shoes I got I can wear when I go out for my birthday this week.

Speaking of my birthday, I'm probably going to be quiet here on LJ until at least Sunday. Sam is going to be arriving here this evening and staying until January 3, so obviously I'll be a bit distracted. Thursday afternoon we're going up to Columbia to spend New Year's Eve with Deec and his girlfriend (it'll be Deec's first time meeting Sam). We're going out for sushi and then going to see Sherlock Holmes at the theater. Then we'll hang out and ring in the New Year - probably with some gaming since all four of us are gamer nerds (Deec has been playing Dungeons & Dragons since the 80's). Hell, even Deec's roommate is a big-time gamer.

Friday (my birthday for those of you keeping track), once we've slept in a bit, we're going to Aiken with Mom and the kiddo to eat at a Japanese hibachi restaurant there. (Yes, two days in a row of Japanese food. Aren't you jealous?) After that, it'll be a trip to the bookstore and some wandering around the pathetic excuse for a mall they have there. There is a gaming store, and we might be able to find some good deals there on a used game or two.

Saturday will be a day of recovery and relaxation at home with the kiddo. (He'll be going to Mom's for New Year's Eve only, so he and Sam are going to have more time to get used to one another.)

I'm going to be cooking meatloaf tonight using a recipe that my mother got from my great aunt. It's a very old recipe, and one I hope I can do justice. Tomorrow I'm going to fry up some cube steak, and I think Saturday I'll either go for chicken or make some Hawaiian meatballs (another old recipe my mother once found in the local newspaper many moons ago). Sam will be one well-fed and happy boyfriend, and I'm actually looking forward to putting my kitchen to work for more than two people (well, one and a half when you consider the kiddo's got a smaller stomach).

I should get going. Sam will be leaving soon and that'll mean I only have four hours to finish straightening up the house, putting away laundry, and squeezing in a bath before I start dinner.
