I'm reading Dead Beat now and I have to say it's just not grabbing me like the others. This isn't to say it's not interesting -- it's interesting and I know I'll finish the book and continue with the series, but it seems to be lacking the tension and edge-of-my-seat action I'm used to.
I'm not sure what it is, either. Things are happening, and they're happening at the usual Dresden pace, but I'm not getting that sense of urgency to get things done. [Possible Spoiler] has given a Harry a two or three day deadline to find this important possibly Apocalypse inducing item, and I'm still not getting the feeling that this is a big deal.
It could be me and my current state of dealing with anxiety off and on that I'm just not picking up on the anxiety that I should be getting from the book. Or maybe it's that the sky is always falling in Harry's world so by now I'm used to it and know that in the end there will be a resolution wherein Harry wins. (Of course, he usually winds up losing a good bit too.) Then again, when he's talking to Thomas at a time when there's less than 48 hours until the deadline and he is still relatively clueless as to what the bad guys actually want, they have a talk and it's...very ho-hum. I swear I almost expected Harry to say, "Just another day at the office," and not with the usual sarcasm he's famous for. Hell, even when Mab showed up, I only went "OH SHI-" for two sentences and then I was feeling rather unimpressed by her. (Harry has to tell us why we should be afraid of Mab, which means this scene is really weak.)
Like I said, it's not that the book isn't interesting. The plot is intriguing and I'm reading to find out what's going on and how it's going to resolve itself, and there is action happening constantly. It's more that we're just going through the motions instead of the normal "I can't catch my breath" I both like and hate about previous Dresden books.
At least there hasn't been as much "I hate seeing women hurt, BUT I'M NOT A SEXIST JERK" like there usually is. Of course, it helps that Murphy is out of town with [Possible Spoiler]. (And seriously? I know Murphy's a divorcee and probably lonely and all that, but it seems so out of character for her to be, well, obviously stupid and I worry this is Butcher setting up a scenario that will ultimately involve Harry coming to Murphy's rescue. I hope I'm wrong. Really hope I'm wrong and maybe Murphy has picked up on something about [Possible Spoiler] that Harry and others have missed.)
There's just some zing missing somewhere in here. Again, it could be me and we all know how hard I am to please. :p
