Finally spoke to Mom today after only speaking with a nurse yesterday. (I didn't want to push for a phone call since she was still in a lot of pain and had her first meeting with the occupational therapist.) Anyway, I was mistaken, her
left shoulder is the one with the worst fracture and, so far, the only one that's been immobilized. Her right arm is in a sling to keep her movement minimal but to allow her at least a chance at being able to do
some things with her right hand. She still has to have someone hold the phone for her or prop the phone up, but she was in much better spirits today compared to Monday.
Tomorrow she gets transferred back to her town at the rehabilitation center there that's tied in with the local nursing home. After two weeks, she'll go back to the orthopedic surgeon to check on how the shoulders are healing, though it'll still be six to eight weeks before she might even have the opportunity to return home (this is assuming that there is no need for surgery). She's on calcium supplements and they had been giving her shots of
Dilaudid, but are obviously weening her off of it and will probably put her on some other medication for longer-term pain management. Given Dad's experience with morphine and Dalaudid, I'm rather glad Mom was lucid and the drug doesn't have the same effect of sending her to la-la land like it did Dad.
As for me, I'm heading to SC Friday morning. Sasha will be going with us and we're going to crash at Mom's house, which is just a hop, skip, and a jump from the rehab center so we can spend most of the weekend out there. I'll either drive back to NC Sunday night or Monday morning, depending on how I feel. Mom said that since she doesn't need to worry about purchasing food for herself for the next month or so that she can front me some gas money. She realizes this came at the worst possible time, but that's just how our family rolls. The good news is that there's some food at her house that needs to be eaten or it's just going to go to waste (she'd just gone shopping prior to Sunday night).
Today I think I'm going to nap, fill out a couple of job applications online, and do lots of writing. I'll drop into WoW at some point to do some dailies and just check and see if anything is going on.
