Twenty some-odd years later, it's not hard for me to understand why The Golden Girls will be a timeless show that resonates with women young and old. Melissa McEwan wrote something today that I think bears repeating again and again:

Dear Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia:

This letter is long overdue. As you know, we have spent many joyful hours together over the last two-and-a-half decades, laughing warmly about all kinds of kooky highjinks, and I've never properly thanked you for everything you've given me.

Thank you for being a part of my childhood. Thank you for hanging out with me, in four-hour blocks on Saturday mornings, when I was in college; there has been and never will be any better hangover cure than you ladies. Thank you for always being there on some obscure cable channel or other in the middle of the night when I have insomnia.

Thank you for being feminists. Thank you for showing me that divorce isn't shameful, that being a widow doesn't mean your life is over, that love and sex are different things, that sex can be fun and frivolous and not always fraught with meaning (and judgment). Thank you for showing me women are cool. And smart. And funny as hell. Thank you for showing me that female friendships are awesome.

* Jade stirs in the morning, rolling over to her right side in her bed and tries to sleep in a little longer.
* Sasha appears at the edge of the bed.

Sasha: "Yip, woof, yip." (Translation: "Oh, you're awake. Can we play?")
Penny: "[indecipherable grunting]" (Translation: "If you need me, I'll be on the couch.")
* Penny gets up and walks to the living room.
* Jade groans and pulls the covers up.
Sasha: "Whimper, woof, yip, yip!" (Translation: "Yay, I love peek-a-boo. Now it's your turn to pet me.")
* Jade sighs and pets Sasha's head.
Jade: "Good morning Sasha."
* Sasha wags her tail and tries to nip and pounce on Jade's hand.

* Jade is typing at her computer, pretending to be an aspiring writer.
* Sasha gets under the table and lays at Jade's feet for a few minutes before nipping at her toes.

Jade: "Ow!"
* Jade resumes typing.
* Sasha tugs on Jade's pants with her teeth.
* Jade looks down between her legs and sees this.

Jade: "What?"
Sasha: "Woof, woof, woof!" (Translation: "Oh, hey, since you're not busy anymore, can we play?")

* Jade is helping Kiddo get dressed.
* Sasha tries to play with Kiddo.
* Kiddo giggles.
* Sasha tries to run off with Kiddo's sock and/or shoe.

Kiddo: "My shoes!"
* Sasha stops and sits down.
Sasha: "Yip, yip, yip-yip." (Translation: "Hey, let's run outside!")
Jade: "Just a second, Sasha. We need to finish putting on clothes."
Sasha: "Woof, whimper, whimper." (Translation: "But you're taking too long!")

* Jade tries to cook at the stove.
* Sasha tugs on Jade's pants or nips at her feet.

Jade: "Ow! Stop that!"
Sasha: "Yip-yip, yip-yip." (Translation: "You're not doing anything important. Let's play.")

* Jade finds her shoes and stops at the door.
Jade: "Sasha? Let's go walk to the mailbox and run around outside."
Sasha: "ZzzzzZzzzz." (Translation: "Can't you see I need my beauty sleep?")

Some of you know that until this past December, I had hair down to my waist. I took about six inches off of it and it's now only down to my mid-back. Well, some of you may also recall before then that I had some "fun" trying to re-color my hair after dyeing it black for a few months. After two attempts at making a single color, I gave up. When I was getting it hacked off in December, my new stylist Jane (not her real name) remarked that I had "about six different colors in [my] hair." Color me embarrassed, pardon the pun.

I've been going to Jane since then for trims to keep my hair healthy and to keep the split ends at bay. Tuesday I allowed her to color my hair for me in the hopes I could once again have single color hair. First she had to lighten the ends a little because despite my attempts at decolorizing and nearly a year since I last used black hair dye, the color had not left my hair. She managed to get it to a lighter shade of brown, one suitable enough to hold a new color (we hoped). Doing this meant she had to wash my hair and then dry it before she could color it.

Jane has informed me each time she's done my hair that it's not only very healthy, but it's also very thick and holds water well. I don't handle anyone's hair but my own so I can only take her word for this. However, I do know how long it takes to dry my hair with a dryer, so I do feel a little bad for her when I can see that her arms are getting tired while taking up to twenty minutes to dry my hair. I also know that she's going to have to wash my hair and dry it again after she's applied the color.

It took two hours to do my hair Tuesday. She had to use about twelve ounces of color when she normally uses only about two or three. For all of this, she only charged me what she would have done for an all-over color (including the lightening and accounting for my longer hair). I could see that she might be a little sore in her arms afterward, so I gave her a 20% tip because she does a great job and has a great sense of humor. Plus, she compliments me on how awesome and healthy my hair is (I didn't even need a trim this time because she couldn't spot a single split end).

Either way, my hair is once-again red again for the first time in ten plus years. It's a very subtle red too, and looks almost black in low-light. In fact, Mom asked if she just put red highlights in my hair, and I had to show her that it was in fact all the same color.

Unfortunately, it still takes me a long-ass time to dry my hair. I'm writing this after spending over twenty minutes of quality time with my hair dryer. But hey, it looks kick-ass and will be very awesome for gaming tonight and going out to the movies tomorrow while I'm in Atlanta.

OK, folks. I'm leaving for Atlanta in about two or three hours. I'll be back some time Saturday evening (March 14th).

If there is some sort of emergency and you need me, you can text me on AIM via JadeWoulf. If you have my cell phone number, you may call me. If it's not an emergency, but you want to leave me a note of some kind, either leave a comment here, or e-mail me at mytimetoheal at livejournal dot com. Either way I'll get an e-mail, but there are no guarantees I can check it before Friday night or Saturday morning.

Again, I doubt there'll be anything I'm specifically needed for, but I wanted to post it here. As usual, I'll be texting to my Twitter every so often in case you get curious about what I may be up to. Tonight it's just hanging out with some of Sam's friends and doing a little gaming followed by some movies. Tomorrow is lunch, movie, and I think my first ever trip to a Dave and Brusters(sp?). Oh, and somewhere in there I've penciled in lots and lots of sleep. :)

Mom's on her way to pick up the kiddo and take him to speech for me. I'm going to take the dogs to her house on my way out of town. Sasha gets to have a playmate for a couple of days and a big fenced-in backyard to roam in. Plus, knowing my mother, she'll get spoiled rotten while I'm gone.
