Do You Have Gaps in Your Knowledge?

There's an intact male cat hanging out under my porch. He keeps mewing, but he's obviously shy around humans. I left some food out for him, which he devoured. A neighbor's cat chased him off, but he came back, which is when I spotted a third cat outdoors. I'm thinking there is a female in heat somewhere and this poor guy has been looking for love but got in a scuffle. Gwen and Prissy keep going out to the screened-in porch when he mews and they're intent on making it clear this is their domain. They're safe. I'll just be extra vigilant to make sure they don't sneak out the front door when I'm coming and going. With all those cats around, it's certainly not safe for them.

As for the tom cat, if he's still hanging around tonight, I'll leave another can of wet food out for him and put out an old blanket so he can stay warm (it's getting into the 30s at night). I definitely can't let him inside since I don't know if he's got anything like FIV or if he's got fleas (both Gwen and Prissy are allergic). If he sticks around, I'll have to find someone to trap him and take him in. I won't call the shelter yet because, really, the one here sucks and is really overcrowded. :(

If you have the money, maybe you should take him to the veterinarian yourself and have him examined. Could you take in one more cat? It sounds like he might need you.

I have the money, but taking in another cat isn't really a good idea. Besides, he seems feral and still hasn't let me approach him. He doesn't seem physically injured in any way and while he mews for attention, the minute I come within a foot of him, he bolts. So, capturing him for a trip to the vet will prove difficult. I'll see how he does.
