Time for another recap, though this one was disappointing.
Episode 6x02: "Two and a Half Men"
This episode was honestly quite underwhelming. Sure, things happened, but it all seemed to serve no purpose other than bringing Dean back into the hunting fold.
It opens with yet another blonde white woman being brutally murdered while trying to protect her infant child. (Really, writers, I know this is a horror series, but you could do with getting a new schtick. Your misogyny has been more than obvious for a long, long time.) Someone kills her and takes the baby, the fourth such murder and kidnapping in a short amount of time. Sam investigates with Samuel in the background doing some computer research.
We switch over to Dean, who is back with Lisa and Ben as per last week's episode ending. They've moved to a new house and Dean is being an over-protective jerk. Well, okay, not so much jerk as just someone understandably afraid because he doesn't know what's out there that might be looking for him. He's keeping Ben and Lisa on lockdown.
Meanwhile, Sam finds a lead on the monster of the weekthat we the audience know is a shifter thanks to the somewhat spoilery recap before the episode began. Of course, he doesn't show up in time to save the parents of the next baby victim, but he does manage to have a run-in with the monster who reacts badly to being cut with a silver knife. The monster figures that running is better for now while Sam stays behind to do some searching of the house. Of course he finds the baby and he calls Samuel.
Um, no, he calls Dean for help because he's totally all about respecting Dean's right to have a life that doesn't involve hunting. Dean reluctantly leaves Lisa and Ben but not before showing Lisa how to use a gun. (Lisa continues to grow on me by threatening to shoot Dean if he doesn't get out and go see his brother.)
Anyway, there's some forced comedy of Dean actually managing to be pretty good at handling a baby, aside from the typical "men can't change diapers" trope. At the grocery store the shifter appears as a kindly older woman who is obviously maternal and knows a lot about baby stuff, but fortunately there's a security camera broadcasting on a nearby television screen and we see that, on video, the shifter's eyes glow and Dean and Sam manage to save the baby.
The brothers get a hotel room, and there's an angsty Dean moment where we see that Dean is turning into his father. I rolled my eyes a bit at all this because, well, this isn't Dean. Yeah he has his moments where he sheds a few manly tears, but this? He's doubting himself and getting hung up on the fact he's acting a little like John? Not the Dean Winchester I know and love.
Anyway, Dean stays with the baby at a motel room while Sam goes to talk to the only survivor of the targeted houses -- the estranged husband of one of the victims (again, writers, it's okay for women to come out of these things unscathed sometimes). It's here we learn that the baby daddy isn't the baby daddy and that the mother was apparently knocked up by a shifter posing as her husband. This is proven when Dean witnesses the baby shifting its appearance to that of the baby pictured on the box of diapers purchased.
Naturally, the shifter shows up to take the baby and delivers an ominous monologue to Dean about "Our [the baby's and the shifter's] father." Of course Sam happens to pick that moment to show up to gank the shifter with a silver bullet.
Now Sam calls Samuel to ask for help and I'm staring at my television screen asking why he didn't do this in the first place. The baby was clearly orphaned and there was no need to call Dean back into action to perform babysitting duties. Really, like I said, this episode really seemed to have no point.
Samuel says they're going to raise the baby to be a hunter because that's such a great idea that could never backfire.
Anyway, with the baby at the Campbell clan's place, Samuel and Dean have a few words about trust, which I figured should have happened last week. Dean points out that he seems to be the only concerned with the fact that both Samuel and Sam were pulled out of heaven and hell and no one knows why. Sam says he is concerned, though I note that Samuel seemed more upset that Dean isn't ready to trust him.
Before things get too out of hand, another shifter shows up...wearing the face of Samuel. Sam and Dean head down to the convenient panic room while an epic battle happens upstairs.
Instead of killing the shifter with silver, they try to tranquilize it, which fails spectacularly when the shifter proceeds to eject the darts out of his back and snap the neck of one of the Campbell cousins (but NOT the token female shockingly enough).
The shifter gets downstairs to the panic room, this time wearing Sam's face. A fight ensues and Sam gets tossed like a rag doll out of the room leaving just Dean, the baby, and the monster. Before our eyes, the shifter changes into Dean's visage, clothes and all. What's more, there's no icky shedding of skin, just a simple shift in the blink of an eye.
The shifter stops short of killing Dean, only doing what it needs to do to grab the baby and get out of there. Back upstairs, Samuel and Sam reveal they suspect that shifter was an "Alpha." Samuel explains, "All monsters have to come from somewhere," and that that shifter was the first shifter, the one going around making all these little baby shifters.
Dean immediately gets suspicious that Samuel and Sam seem only mildly surprised by the existence of this alpha shifter. He asks Sam if they were playing the role of bait, but Sam vehemently denies this and says Samuel is a good hunter we can trust.
It's at this point that I said in IRC, "So, um, with ten minutes left, pretty much not a whole lot has been accomplished by this episode."
Meanwhile Samuel takes a phone call from some mysterious person who is apparently upset they didn't capture the alpha shifter. Who is this person? Does Sam know? Seriously, what the hell is this episode supposed to be about? The brothers and their grandfather accomplished absolutely diddly squat.
Dean goes back home and he has more angst about wanting to be a hunter and wanting to stay with Lisa and Ben. Lisa kind of sort of kicks Dean out and suggests that he go back to hunting and come back to visit her and Ben whenever he can. She says she's willing to take the risk of relationship implosion because Dean is that important to her (and presumably Ben).
The show ends with Dean taking the protective cover off the Impala while "Smoke on the Water" plays.
OMG THE IMPALA IS BACK YAY!
And, um, that seems to be all the episode was about: getting Dean back into hunting and bringing back the Impala with an awesome rock song.
In spite of tonight's disappointment, I'm eager for next week because, yay, Castiel is coming back!
